Breakbeat
An original work for strings orchestra, turntables and dub delay. The piece is an investigation of where noise stops, and music starts; inspired by the work of pioneering American maverick and thinker; John Cage. Also, the work of experimental turntablists, and techniques of sampling as they were when the work was first conceived in the mid 1990's.
In creating the work, I manipulated a loop of noise/sound until melody and rhythm emerged. I then used this as a starting point for the compositional process. The looped 'breakbeat' is deliberately referencing the urban music of the time, with the recorded 'narrator' reading text from the Technics SL 1200 turntable manual, alongside quotes by John Cage himself. I then pressed the loop onto an acetate which is responded to by DJ Jaffa, allowing for improvisation, and chance. The beats are fed through a 'dub delay' in performance, adding another improvised layer of noise to emerge in performance.
I see the turntable as being symbolic of the urban, and of experimentation in sound, and the idea was formed, and inspired by the concrete sculpture 'Concrete Stereo' by Ron Arad.
